It’s from the movie â€Å"Training Day† starting Denzel Washington. Training Day is a movie that comes straight from the streets it depicts a product of the match up between screenwriter David Ayer, who grew up in South Central Los Angeles, and director Antoine Fuqua, who grew up on the rough side of Pittsburgh. Both men are intimately familiar with the daily, potentially explosive face-offs between cops and criminals in urban America. The director Antoine Fuqua vision for this film was to bring the heat and intensity to the movie Training Day to the big screen. Fuqua wanted Training Day to look as authentic as possible, and he shot on location in some of the most infamous neighborhoods of Los Angeles. He also wanted to show the audience what officers in the rough neighborhoods of Los Angeles experience on the outside and also on the inside as they grapple with an amoral world of drug dealers, murderers, rapists and thieves. Fuqua wanted to show the audience a rough, undaunted, fast moving style of life on the other side of the legal line. With this film he was able to capture the mean streets of Los Angeles in an honest and revealing way, but also with a visual style that makes every scene exciting, whether it’s a major action sequence or just two guys in a car talking. Production Designer Naomi Shohan wanted the movie’s design to reflect the underlying relevance of the story because they filmed in all real locations. All the interiors done on stage were taken from the locations and researched in the neighborhoods with the help of the residents which also gave the film the authenticity of being in the â€Å"hood†. She became sort of an urban anthropologist, because everything the viewer sees is as it really is. The colors and textures used, change throughout the scene, but everything they used was taken directly from the neighborhood that you find yourself in throughout the clip. Cinematographers and art directors play a very important and creative role in film production. They work closely with the director and give a film its unique visual look and identity. The art director, David Lazan and cinematographer, Mauro Fiore, shot the film almost entirely in sequence, following the clock from the crack of dawn to a very dark night of reckoning. Compressing intense action and emotion into a brief time frame became one of their key challenges. They had to make sure the film felt like it was one single day unfolding which became the single biggest challenge during the production. Explain how the artists utilize lighting in the scene. How does the lighting affect our emotional understanding of certain characters? What sort of mood does the lighting evoke? Washington’s character, Alonzo, is displayed as a powerful, yet currupt police officer who believes that he is untouchable. The way Alonzo dresses shows a look of dominance. In the clip I chose Alonzo (Denzel Washington) is on the dark and dominant streets of L.A, surrounded by gangs and the people of the community that he very well is suppose to have been protecting and serving. Alonzo tries to keep the tough guy look for most of the part only showing one emotion. However at this point of the film, Alonzo does not have the tough guy look as he have had when no one helps him in time of need. Explain what costuming can tell us about a character. In what ways can costuming be used to reflect elements of the films plot? Explain how hairstyle and makeup can help tell the story. What might hairstyle and makeup reveal about the characters? Discuss your opinion regarding the mise-en-scà ¨ne. Do the elements appear to work together in a harmonious way? Does the scene seem discordant? Do you think the design elements are congruent with the filmmaker’s vision for the scene? From the moment you set eyes on him you can relies that Alonzo is a feisty character, who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Denzels performance is absolutely riveting. Every scene hes in, hes got the audience captivated with his dark costuming and the character’s dark and dominant personality. Ethan Hawke (Jake Hoyt) provides excellent backup. Jake is a bright eyed and innocent rokkie who reports to his training officer for his first day on the job in narcotics in the LAPD. He never could have fathomed just how much he would learn on that very first Training Day. Overall, Training Day proved to send a powerful message and gave us a small glimpse of what is truly happening in our society, the effect that the epidemic of drugs and violence are having in our cities and the corruption that is happening among our most trusted police officers. Each grows out of the other. And we need them all† (Re-inventing 1995). These words spoken by the distinguished author, Arthur C. Clarke, bring to light where exactly the technological situation in education is and the direction it is going. The discussion and debate of introducing and improving classrooms with technology has been a relatively heated topic as of late. Many have even claimed that if schools are to survive it is imperative for us to stand back and carefully rethink our notions of intelligence, learning, instruction, and evaluate the situation in light of the new age of communication. In discussing the use of technology in education a distinction needs to be made between itself and ‘tech ed’. The common definition of technology education is that it is an action based program for all students to use resources to design, produce, use, and assess the impacts of products and services that extend human potential to improve and control the natural and human made development (Patterson 1999). While these skills and practices are integrated into using technology in education it does not fully explain or utilize what is needed to provide affective technology in the classroom. “More than our brother is our chastity”. How far do you find yourself able to condone Isabella’s point of view

John 15:13 says: â€Å"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends†. In the traditional Christian Elizabethan society; this sentiment would have been revered; Shakespeare’s Puritanical and Catholic audiences would have loved the ideas of self-sacrifice and the immediate ascension into heaven. However, in Measure for Measure, Shakespeare manages to challenge this verse; he manipulates the situations and then causes the audience to digest the complexity of the verse, and causes the audience to question whether Isabella’s estimation that fornicating to save the life of another is not only morally wrong and a direct rebuttal of Jesus’ sentiment; but a damning sin. Isabella’s introduction into the play arouses intrigue in audiences and readers, as she is described as having a â€Å"speechless dialect/Such as move men†; so it is expected that audiences and readers would be waiting with bated breath fro Isabella to meet Angelo; and Shakespeare does not disappoint. The scene is written in blank verse, with unrhymed lines of iambic pentameter; Isabella first line is not quite metrically even; the word honour cannot be properly stressed, and that falter changes the rhythm of her speech. Her second speech leaves a gap in which Angelo inserts a terse question; almost as if the incomplete pentameter forces Angelo to reply. That first break in rhythm changes the dynamics of Isabelle’s interaction with Angelo. Shakespeare purposefully does this in order to use language and rhythm to convey the intensity of the relationship instantly forged between them; in particular the way the metre swaps between the two speakers. Later in the scene, the roles are reversed. On line 51, the position of the words in the pentameter undermines their stated meaning: while the words themselves speak of a certainty and finality, the rhythm is half-finished; in which Isabella can – metrically must- reopen the argument; although Angelo’s words say there is nor room for argument, he does not, at some level, want to dismiss the argument entirely; The language of the scene shows the extent to which they are aware of each other. So from the beginning of their interaction readers and audiences alike are left to question if this awareness is befitting of a novice nun. Conversely, Isabella may be seen as a model of some aspects of Christian virtue in ‘Measure for Measure', and her opposition to giving up her virginity an extension of her inherent virtue. For instance, in Act 2 Scene 2, Isabella's dialogue with Angelo expresses her quality of mercy, as although Claudio's sexual transgression is â€Å"a vice that I do most abhor†, Isabella argues that Angelo â€Å"might pardon him, / And neither heaven nor man grieve at the mercy. Furthermore she connects this value directly to God and her religion; â€Å"Why all the souls that were, were forfeit once/ And he that might the vantage best have took/ Found out the remedy. † This opposes Angelo's strict adherence to the secular laws of Vienna. His speeches in this scene make repeated references to his view of the law as immobile, such as â€Å"Your brother is a forfeit of the law/ And you but waste your words. He does not address the moral issues surrounding Claudio's crime, and the dry legal connotations of his language may seem to lack sympathy or mercy; this contrasts with Isabella's emotive language and religious allusions. This juxtaposition may have provided Shakespeare's original audiences with an interesting and current rhetorical debate, as the laws of the church and England's common laws were sometimes distinct and contradictory, causing moral and legal conflict. Moreover, the laws at the time were concerned with principles of justice, but did not often consider mercy, which was thought to be a religious virtue. Therefore, the characters of Isabella and Angelo may be intended to represent the two sides of this debate. Similarly, in John Webster’s ‘The Duchess of Malfi† The Duchess is portrayed as character who breaks the traditional Elizabethan revenge plot by to speak and act with the freedom of normal, albeit impulsive human beings. The Duchess is portrayed as sensual and aware of her sexuality, but is still able to become the embodiment of Christian virtue. In some ways Isabella and the Duchess are strikingly similar, but where The Duchess is overtly sexual, Isabella – like Angelo, has a moral compass that causes her to view situations as either Black or White, with no in-between {Insert quotation here} Isabella may therefore represent the difficulties of being a model of virtue, and of holding strict values of chastity and restraint whilst upholding sometimes contrasting principles of mercy and compassion. These themes would have been relevant in Jacobean society, as puritan values – which Isabella's devotion may represent – were becoming increasingly influential politically and socially, for instance the theatres of the suburbs were at times closed by puritan intervening. Furthermore, the play's genre of problem play allows for moral dilemmas to be raised and viewed from both sides. Therefore although seems to Isabella demonstrate a struggle to become ideally virtuous, it cannot be said definitively whether she succeeds as Angelo brings to light an equally challenging view â€Å"Is there no charity in sin? † However, it could be argued that modern values make it difficult for todays’ audience and readers to full grasp the gravity of Isabella’s situation. A similar story to ‘Measure for Measure’ is outlined in the Elizabethan novella â€Å"Eptia and Juriste† by Giraldi Cintho; in which Juriste is appointed governor of Innsbruck. He sentences a young man Vico to death; and like Angelo, Juriste propositions Epitia for sexual favours in exchange for her brother’s life, hinting that he might even marry her later. Epitia refuses indignantly â€Å"My brother’s life† she says with noble fierceness â€Å"is indeed very dear to me, but my honour is far dearer: my life I would willingly lose to save his, but I will not preserve him with my honour† so it could be argued that dilemma’s like this were popular and scintillating with Elizabethan audiences, as they understood the true depth of both women’s situations. Unfortunately, the representation of Isabella's religious devotion may appear – to some readers and audiences; humorous in its extremes, such as when in Act 1 Scene 4 she wishes for â€Å"a more strict restraint† even than â€Å"the votarists of St Claire†, a Catholic order that Shakespeare's audiences may have recognised as following rigorous rules of poverty. Furthermore, Isabella's devotion to chastity may place her on what seems like a moral highroad unachievable by most, and this may causes an audience to question or disapprove of her character. However, although Isabella's resilient chastity may have therefore seemed virtuous, her direct language: â€Å"Better it were a brother died at once† could seem unsympathetic and her use of the pronoun â€Å"our† in her proclamation â€Å"more than our brother is our chastity† could be seen as unemotional and an attempt to depersonalise he situation; making it harder for audiences and readers alike to empathise with her. Although, the argument of Isabella’s lack of sympathy for Claudio could be countered with her argument that Angelo should put himself in Claudio's place: â€Å"Go to your bosom, / Knock there, and ask your heart what it doth know/ That's like my brother's fault†. ; the emphasis on the shifting pronouns enacts the level of syntax, the act of identification she seeks to prompt. Also, it may be significant that Isabella sticks to her values of chastity even though it involves emotional upheaval, whereas Angelo, when he discovers he is not the legal and moral puritan he had previously thought himself to abandons his values completely and becomes a tyrant, exploiting both the law and the other characters for his own benefit, saying: â€Å"I have begun, /And now I give my sensual race the rein. † So, while Angelo is portrayed as occupying the same if not higher moral ground that Isabella, his fall from grace is well documented and juxtaposed against Isabella – who sometimes unethical but never immoral, it shows that Isabella’s strength lies I her unwavering moral compass, and easily giving over her virtue would be untrue of her character. This is portrays especially well in Act 2 Scene 4, where Angelo asks â€Å"who would believe thee Isabel? â€Å". Here Shakespeare's use of the rhetorical question emphasises Angelo's power over Isabella, in that he is relying on his â€Å"unsoiled name† to protect him from prosecution. The imagery of the â€Å"unsoiled† name implies that Angelo's power stems from his past reputation, in that no one would believe that he would be capable of succumbing to the same weaknesses as other's. This point is mirrored in the â€Å"Duchess of Malfi† in which the Cardinal places his power in his reputation as no one expects him to be a fornicator as his position supposedly attests to his morality. In conclusion, Isabella's conflict in the play has a deep moral centre. She wants to become a nun, but can only save her brother's life by surrendering her chastity to Angelo. When she says, â€Å"More than our brother is our chastity† I believe she is not being cruel or selfish, but trying very hard to adhere to an ingrained sense morality, and unlike many characters in the play, she sticks to her values and her faith; and this might seem foreign even to some Elizabethan audiences, as in some cases, representations of women of this time can be seen as being limited to idolised virgins, or sexual women who were often demonised as whores. So, because Isabella is not a perfect religious ideal, but as a woman with flaws who is placed in a difficult situation, and tries to achieve the best outcome; it is easy to respect her.

Students are not allowed to leave the hostel after a certain time, and this is to be followed very strictly. 5. Keeping in touch with your parents will ensure that you don’t feel homesick. 6. Give the phone numbers of your roommates and some other friends to your parents along with the hostel contact number, so that your parents can get information about you in case your number is not reachable. 7. If your roommates intentionally disturb you while studying, try and make them understand this. If this does not work, bring it to the notice of the hostel warden at the earliest. 8. Be friendly and helpful to other hostel members. 9. Participate in functions or programmes organised in the hostel. You will develop your friend circle and extra-curricular activities. 10. If your seniors ask you to introduce yourself to them, cooperate if it is in the spirit of fun and not harassment. If they try to trouble you physically or mentally, immediately speak to the warden. 11. Give priority to your studies. Remember your parents have let you to study outside because they trust you. 12. Try to maintain a healthy relationship with other students. Never interfere in others’ personal matters. 13. Bring along these things: mattress, towels, soap and shampoo. They are usually not offered by the hostels. 14. Learning cultures: One feature of hostel life is you must learn to share your room with a person from another state or region. This can be a real learning experience. There may be initial adjustment problems, but gradually you learn about other cultures. 15. Last but not the least — avoid carrying valuable things as you alone will be responsible for their safety.

Most of the immigrants faced such kind of treatment from the white community to suppress their efforts of finding the Americans identity. The United States government was afraid of the Japanese because this was a group that seemed so powerful compared to Asians and the Germany. Yuka encounters a hostile environment at UO which results from the imprisonment of her family members. The Yasui family were imprisoned for being spies Discrimination made it difficult for Yuka to pursue her career at the medical school. This is because Japanese-American women were discriminated against attending medical schools. Yasui imprisonment including the loss of his belonging raised much suspicion making Hood River inhabitable following the war (Kessler 87). Since the Japanese-Americans were out to find their American identity, Yasui did not give up the hope even after being imprisoned and his family evacuated from homes. H aving moved to Portland, Masuo Yasui decides to have his energy directed to assisting his fellow immigrants who had been evacuated to go back to their lives and homes and become United States citizens. He devoted his time to teaching the Japanese women and men most of who were elderly to get ready for citizenship. He even gives challenge to other immigrants’ by becoming the first person to have passed the tests offered and hence becoming an American citizen by naturalization at sixty six years old. The twentieth century immigrants devoted themselves in helping their fellow immigrants so that they could attain the America identity as one people. A New Found Love Contractions: the worst pain you can ever experience. There I was laying on my bed, groaning in absolute pain just after taking a hot bath, thinking that was going to subdue the feeling of being ripped apart but no it made it that much worse. At 24 years of age, pregnant with your first child, all you can emotionally feel is fear. Not knowing what to expect when that special day finally arrives. My mom trying to comfort me but also recording my experience and I can hear my dad worried in the corner watching me in absolute pain yelling at my mom, â€Å"Let’s take her to the hospital already, put down the camera!† Mind you, this was somewhere around 10 P.M. and earlier that day I was experiencing the same pain but a lot milder and somewhat bearable. I decided to drive to the hospital because as any normal laboring mother would, you would think it’s time for the baby to arrive. The drive to the hospital, the first time, was filled with excitement as I was ready to b e admitted. Once I get strapped and situated into the contraction machine, I sit there and I wait for what felt like 3 hours. When the nurse finally walks in, she checks to see my dilation progress which is where the disappointment comes in. She tells me, â€Å"No honey, I’m sorry but you are only at  ½ cm† . I tell her, â€Å" but the pain is starting to feel intense.† She responds, â€Å"It’s only going to get worse so be prepared.† Following the first visit to the hospital, was a sad, bitter, and sort of angry feeling. Being sent home after thinking you are going to be admitted is pretty frustrating when all you want to do is meet the child that has been living inside of you for nine months. I couldn’t understand why they couldn’t just take me in but I listened and drove 40 minutes back home only to wallow in some more pain. A couple hours pass before the pain worsens and intensifies. I felt like my back was being jack-hammered and radiating to my abdomen. I decided to make a second trip back to the hospital with both of my parents this time and the same thing happens again. I felt this sudden urge to cry because of one: the pain, and two: I remembered the nurse saying it was only going to get worse and I was too afraid for that pain to come. So being sent home a second time only made me nervous and fearful for what I was about to endure. When I arrived home for the second time, I think to myself maybe a bath might help alleviate this pain. Boy was I completely wrong. I think the only thing I did was make it worse and kick-start my labor process! And here we are again back to me laying down in pain taking these contractions like a champ. I finally decide to head to the hospital again for the third time in the same day, but this time the drive was filled with fear, nervousness, and my mom telling me to hold the baby in. I believe that drive was the scariest moment for me because I really believed I was going to be one of those moms that had their baby in the car. Despite me suffering from labor pains, I felt bad for my dad because he was the driver but I had never seen him so scared or nervous in my life. It’s about 11:20 P.M. maybe, I don’t remember the exact time but it was late. The hospital was closed and because I thought I knew my way around, I ended up pulling up to the wrong side instead of going to the emergency entrance, duh! I am only having a baby. So because of that little mistake I had to beg security to open up the doors and let me in before I have this baby on the floor. Of course they do, and they ask if I am in labor. My face said it all and she tells me to hurry and get to the delivery room. Walking up to that room was endless with contractions coming and going but I finally manage to get to the buzzer to let me in. As soon as the nurses pulled my clothes off, they frantically call on their walkies, â€Å"We have an emergency in the triage room and we are going to need everyone’s assistance!† They manage to lay me down in the robe that is adequate for birthing and I felt this strong need to push and just as I was going to, one of the nurses stops me and says, â€Å"Not yet hold it for just a bit longer.† I looked at her like she was some crazy idiot but I held it in despite the feeling. When they finally wheel me into the birthing room, they s et me up with painful needles and position me for the â€Å"pushing† part. My doctor walks in frantically trying to get ready, and telling me to give her a push but I was too scared. And why after all this anticipation of wanting to meet my baby? Because I was starting to feel what most women who have had natural births call â€Å"the ring of fire† and let me tell you they were right about that. My doctor says, â€Å"Marisol, look at me! You are doing great and I can already see her, give me a strong push!† I responded with, â€Å"I can’t!† But without even thinking twice I did and then I heard the baby’s famous first cry. That moment was my moment of relief because the pain immediately went away but also a feeling of love and amazement because I couldn’t believe that I had just delivered a tiny human. The moment they put her in my arms was the moment I fell in love. Love is truly blind until the moment you experience becoming a parent for the very first time. The experience of motherhood has taught me a diverse am ount of love and acceptance. I was never prepared to be a mom but I wouldn’t have changed anything that happened. My birthing room was filled with different people of different races who all came together to help me bring a life into this world, and no matter the intense amount of fear I felt, the nurses made me feel safe and that everything was going to be ok. You can never forget an experience like this, so I hold it close and very dear to my heart and I thank those people who were all there for me that night.

Graffiti Art Essay Graffiti is the art of regular people; these people are not considered artists but the criminalised voice of the populace. For most artists, gaining recognition and selling their works for high-prices is a life-long aspiration and for the most recognition doesn’t happen before death. Graffiti artists don’t have these ambitions and from city to coast we can admit to admiring the aesthetic value and eccentric expressions that are portrayed by Graffiti artists. They portray quirky, humorous artworks and provide a political voice for the lower class people of the world. Largely emerging in the late 1970’s and the early 1980’s, Graffiti was the people’s way of expressing their feelings about anti-consumerism, anti-war, feminist and political issues. It is the art that has attitude and makes every surface of a city an installation that brings people together and provokes thought about the world as it is. A largely popular quasi-anonymous graffiti artist that is supposedly from Bristol, England is Banksy. As his artworks were considered criminal he ensured that his real name was not discovered by the media and to this day remains anonymous. Inspired by local artists and the Bristol underground scene, Banksy initially employed freehand and stencilling techniques to create his pieces but later converted to stencilling entirely after â€Å"realising how much less time it took to complete a piece† (Wikipedia, 2008). He used graffiti to â€Å"promote alternative aspects of politics from those promoted by mainstream media† (Sewell, 2010) and provided a voice for people affected by political issues that could not express their emotions. It is highly debated as to whether graffiti is in fact art or vandalism with many people regarding the work of Banksy and similar artists such as Blek le Rat and Jef Aerosol as straight up criminal destruction. In regards to Banksy’s work being vandalism he states that â€Å"Some people become cops because they want to make the world a better place. Some people become vandals because they want to make the world a better looking place† (Vidar, 2011). Though, to this day graffiti that is not approved legally is considered a criminal act that is punishable, instead of being seen as art brightening the bland streets of this world. Not only does Banksy regard his pieces to be artworks, Terrance Lindall an artist and executive director of the Williamsburg Art and Historic Centre also made a tatement about graffiti, he says, Graffiti is revolutionary, in my opinion and any revolution might be considered a crime. People who are oppressed or suppressed need an outlet, so they write on walls—its free (Ciuraru, 2006) Despite the social and economic status of the people holding these high opinions of graffiti art, be the lower class or even highly educated, Banksy remains an artistic fugitive in hiding and graffiti still remains illegal. Banksy is essentially a modern day, anonymous Andy Warhol that has the clear capacity to insult, irritate and mock, in the most educated way possible. He is the representation of everyone, he remains anonymous as there is no need to meet such an artist; we would simply have to look in the mirror and we would find Banksy. He has the ability to delve deep into the thoughts of common society and voice the feelings that people are afraid to exploit publicly, which makes him an incredibly powerful figure. His artworks promote the underdogs, the suppressed mentality of an entire societal collective, the mentality of the corrupt and the moral deterioration that continues to spread like an uncontrollable wild fire. Even though Banksy is rebelling against not only the law, but politics and those in society who disagree with his creations he was also rebelling against the movements of other artists at the time.

Both of these texts convey an Indian world and the people in it. â€Å"Monsoon Wedding† is a party arthouse, party Bollywood film which deals with the leadup to the wedding of two young people, Aditi and Hermant. It combines their story with that of Aditi’s father, Lalit, and his family responsibilities, as well as the events occurring in the lives of their servants, Dubey and Alice. This combining of multiple storylines into one cohesive narrative is one of the characteristics of Bollywood films. The title of the film refers to the monsoon, or rainy season, in India. The majority of the film is set in the buildup to the monsoon, when the oppressive heat is at its strongest. This is metaphorically linked to the buildup of tension and anxiety in the days leading up to the wedding. The monsoon itself, like the wedding, symbolises cleansing and renewal before a new start. One thing that sets this film apart from other Bollywood films is that it deals with taboo issues in its portrayal of Uncle Tej’s pedophilia. This is seen from the point of view of his pat victim, Ria. The audience is not told explicitly what is occurring, but through the use of shots of Ria appearing distressed followed by shots of Tej, it becomes apparent that something sinister is happening. The Catcher in the Rye was written by J.D. Salinger. The main character is Holden Caulfield. Holden is a troubled student, who is most of the time depressed. The book starts out with him somewhere like a medical center for depression and his health. Holden lives in New York. He starts out telling you about his brother D.B. who is a writer and lives in Hollywood. He then goes on to tell you how it all started. He has gotten kicked out by many schools, and his latest school, Pencey, is no different. The only subject he does well in is English. Everything else he does not care for. He is supposed to leave wednesday, but it is saturday. He has just gotten back from a fencing game which his team had to forfeit, because Holden forget the foils. His neighbor in their dorms, Ackley, keeps bothering him. Ackley does not take care of his hygiene and hates almost everybody except Holden. But Holden's roommate, Stradlater, comes in, causing Ackley to leave. Stradlater has a date with Jane, a fri end of Holden's. Stradlater gets ready then leaves Holden. Holden, Ackley, and another boy go out to eat, but none of them want to go to the movies, because Ackley and the other boy have already seen it. Holden does not care, because he hates movies. They go back to their dorms. Ackley goes to bed, and Holden just stares out the window. Stradlater comes in soon, and Holden asks him about his date. Stradlater will not say much which freaks out Holden. Holden and Stradlater then get into a fight and Stradlater beats him up. Holden then decides to leave early. His grandma has given him a whole bunch of money, so he goes to a cheap hotel. He leaves the hotel to go to a club, because he cannot sleep. He drinks a bit then goes to another club where he meets ... ...oo crowded, he leaves. He decides to bum his away across the U.S., so he wants to say goodbye to Phoebe. Phoebe is at school so he leaves a note for her with a secretary. It comes time for Phoebe to meet him but she does not. It takes her another hour to come. He lets her skip school even though she is mad at him. They go to the zoo, and after a while, she becomes no longer mad at him. He then takes her to the carousel where she rides it. Is it possible to distinguish between science and pseudo-science? Essay

Introduction: For starters let us try to define both terms. Science is an organized, disciplined, unbiased search for knowledge for the world around us. Remember, Science does not discover facts, but rather finds statements (theories, formulae, descriptions) as a result of having examined the real world. These statements describe what may be expected to be found under stated conditions. Note, science is always prepared to adjust, reverse, abandon and/or subtract to/from its statement, in order to more closely approach the truth: The truth being an unreachable goal, which we will eventually and essentially get to (Randi, Internet). Pseudo-science is an established body of knowledge which tries to pass itself as science. It tries to claim legitimacy that it would not otherwise be able to do on its own. We can also call it fringe or alternative science. It basically lacks the carefully and thoughtfully interpreted experiments which provide the foundation of the natural sciences. Incidentally, this is what contributes to its advancement. A vital point to emphasize is that a body of knowledge is used because science involves elements of intuition and guesswork. In regard to this therefore we discover a major weakness in utilizing the experiments approach in science. This comes about because experiments do not always test a theory adequately, moreover results can be incorrectly interpreted or in cases be plain wrong. In legitimate science, these problems tend to be self correcting, through critical scrutiny by the original researcher of the greater scientific community (Chem1, Internet). Pseudo means fake. Thus, the surest way to spot a fake is to know as much as possible about the original, genuine or the actual science itself. Forthwith, it is of critical importance to understand the nature of science. This will include getting to grips with the criteria of evidence, the design of meaningful experiments, the weighing of possibilities, the testing of hypotheses, the establishment of theories and the many aspects of scientific methods that make it possible to draw reliable conclusions about the physical universe (Quakewatch, Internet). Having said this we ask, is there really a fine line between real science and pseudo-science? And if so, where does it lie? From an initial inspection, it is plain to see that these two are as opposite as rationality and religion are. Whereas we use basic principles such as objectivity and accuracy to establish a finding, we also use in science certain admitted assumptions about reality. These, though, eventually do support themselves; they become proven or result in false verification thus discarded. Pseudo science on its part will utilize invented modes of analysis which substitute for meeting the requirements of scientific method, though they basically violate the essential attributes. It’s easy to identify many examples of these, but it is the more subtle and insidious and convincing cases that require better definition of the attributes involved (Randi, Internet). The quest to clearly identify and determine the line dividing science and pseudo-science is indeed daunting. This is because the media has so much muddled the waters that we are, in instances, compelled to think what we see or hear in the media is the truth. It is wise to remember that, pseudo-science transcends all fields of science. Not one field is safe. For example, in the field of physics [and by extension, other natural sciences] the following are cases (Quackwatch, Internet) that have been used to try and unmask pseudo-science: †¢ It is common the find proponents of pseudo-science referring to work many years old. Unlike science were literature is updated every other year (latest editions) to take into consideration the rapid accumulation of new facts and insights, pseudo-scientists will rarely revise. †¢ This point above exposes pseudo scientists to the intense criticism of holding on to bogus facts proposed many years ago. It has been found that they research by relying on newspaper clippings, hearsay, ancient religions or mythological works as their point of fact. They never bother to perform independent investigation to check their source. †¢ Also they are fond of beginning with a hypothesis. Usually, this hypothesis is very emotionally appealing and spectacularly implausible. After the emotionally appealing hypothesis has been fronted, they then look for supporting evidence. Should any conflict be identified it is quickly ignored or rationalized. †¢ They ignore or misrepresent genuine scientific fact. Pseudo-scientists will instead rely on unverifiable eyewitness testimony, stories, tales, hearsay, rumor and dubious anecdotes. They will invariably rely heavily on subjectivity validation. Newspaper horoscope describes astrology perfectly making many people believe in them. But on close examination, it is found they describe generalities enough to cover virtually everyone (Quackwatch, Internet). No pseudo-scientist who was shouting on the roof top at the beginning of the year offering/ putting forward predictions and hypothesis will be found to analyze how many of them came to pass at the end of the year (Chem1, Internet). This is unlike science where all principles must be tested and remain continually questioned or rejected over time. In pseudo-science, such predictions or hypothesis are not often falsifiable and are equally unlikely to ever be altered or shown to be wrong. This is erroneously taken by proponents as evidence of validity. Where as scientific explanations must be stated clearly in unambiguous terms, this is the opposite in pseudo-science. They often invoke scientific terms in dubious context. For example, ‘energy vibrations’ and ‘subtle energy fields’ sound impressive but are essentially meaningless terminologies (Chem1, Internet). Looking at the case of Electromagnetic frequency for instance, f or a long time pseudo-scientists fronted a case for its likelihood to be associated with causing the onset of cancer. Communities leaving near power lines and also electricians were deemed to be most at risk of contracting cancer in this way. However, after substantive review of existing literature and interview of specialists in the field, it was found that the statistical evidence for a correlation between the two was negligible and growing smaller. Even in the case of electricians, no effort was made to eliminate other factors before placing an accusing finger at high voltage power lines by the pseudo-scientists. Further, pseudo scientists offer little or no theoretical explanation of how such electromagnetic fields [EMF] can actually produce cancer (Csicop, Internet). On the other hand, science is its own worst enemy. It allows stifling of orthodoxy of beat ideas. Science has the tendency of forgetting that many of the best ideas in human history began as heresies. Comparisons between bizarre claims and science as it is actually practiced will show that no sharp division can be established (Math, Internet). Forget the various checklists given to distinguish the two[i. e. science and pseudo science], as none perfectly achieves this. The disagreements and disparities are more to be found on the finer points. Even the most hardened skeptic does not deny the possible validity of paranormal phenomena. It is necessary to point out at this juncture that, the fathers of science; Einstein and Newton, considered today as geniuses, were in their age actually considered heretics. What they chose to bring forward as science was so much against the norm then, that nobody dared believe them. They did not produce their revolutionary ideas in one moment of brilliance as propagated by scientists (findarticles. com).

There are various resources that the Earth provides its inhabitants, but the most important natural resource is water. However, despite the fact that water is an irreplaceable natural resource, humans tend to abuse without knowing the implications. It is necessary to save water not only because it is a very manageable resource (Padmavathy & Malarvizhi, 2006), but also because of the fact that water provides life to every living thing on Earth. Without it, life cannot be sustained: humans can survive weeks without food, but without water, they will only be able to survive for a few days. Apart from this, water also sustains the growth of life in forests, jungles which are the habitats of other species. Unfortunately, as much as the world would like to believe that nature’s resources would last forever, such is not possible. Water is a finite source, and only about 0. 024% of all the water resources in the world is accessible, while the rest of the world’s water supply consists of oceans and inaccessible freshwater in the deep earth (Dauvergne, 2005). Humans, animals, and plant life will not be able to subsist without water; plant life would not be able to grow, and animals which eat plants will not have any food supply. These animals will deplete in numbers, they will devastate the food chain and bigger animals which eat these animals will also lose their food supply. If animals continue to thin in numbers, they would eventually become endangered, and unfortunately, it is possible that they may become instinct. One of the greatest challenges earth is facing is Global Warming. The global warming hypothesis orginated in 1896 when Svante Arrhenius, a Swedish chemist, developed the theory that carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels would cause global temperatures to rise by trapping excess heat in the earth’s atmosphere. The term â€Å"Global Warming† signifies the temperature of the earth’s neon- surface air. The change in climatic conditions is one of the impacts of global warming. It is directly impacting on rising sea levels and the melting of ice. It is a threat to life on earth. The effects of global warming have been increasing significantly for the past decades. Climate change, devastation of the ecosystem, water contamination, melting ice over Arctic and Antarctic regions, negative impacts in the agricultural sector are just the problems caused by global warming. The reason behind this is human activities that lead to release of greenhouse gases. The concentration of greenhouse gases has significantly increased since 20th century. Some Scientists believe that there is an increase of 0.5 Celsius in earth’s temperature since 1900 and will continue to increase. The year 1990 was said to be the hottest year in the last century. We Human Beings have created an imbalance between life and nature that has led to flood, cyclones, landslides, tsunami, drought, etc. If this imbalance continues, soon our life on earth would be difficult. The increase of Carbon-dioxide in air is one of the reasons for warming the earth’s surface. The most significant greenhouse gas is actually water vapor, not something produced directly by humankind in significant amounts. However, even slight increases in atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) can cause a substantial increase in temperature. When the earth’s surface warms up it will eventually lead to evaporation of water. Water vapor, itself is a greenhouse gas. It is believed that the increase in CO2 in the atmosphere will continue due to ongoing burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. Not only CO2 but other gases such as methane, CFCs, nitrous oxide, tropospheric ozone are also responsible for global warming. The increase in these gases is due to industrialization, deforestation, urbanization and increasing population. Nature has given us a mechanism to decrease the content of CO2 in atmosphere but we are exploiting it. Trees are the mechanism given to mankind as a gift from nature. Trees convert CO2 gas into Oxygen. This helps to decrease the CO2 content in atmosphere which eventually helps us prevent  global warming. The question that should be put forward now is that if this mechanism only won’t exist then how will we prevent global warming? Human beings have always been exploiting nature. Trees have been cut down for the benefits of humans without realizing that it is going to affect us eventually. Deforestation is responsible for 25 per cent of all carbon emissions entering the atmosphere, by the burning and cutting of 34 million acres of trees each year. Everyday over 5500 acres of rainforest are destroyed. Increasing population is also one of the reasons for global warming. Approximately, 80 per cent of atmospheric C02 increases are due to man’s use of fossil fuels either in the form of coal, gas or oil. Vehicles with poor gas mileage contribute the most to global warming. Besides, the sulphur group gas is the most harmful for this. Its contribution is 30 per cent in global warming. This gas is also emitted from the burning of fossil fuels. One of the effects of global warming is rise in sea-level. It will lead to melting of glaciers and changes in rainfall patterns. The rate of melting glaciers have been increasing since the past decade. . The shrinking of glaciers is going to pose a major problem of drinking water. The sea levels as a result of melting of glaciers have risen from 0.35 mm to 0.4 mm. Scientists have warned in their reports that most of the glaciers will disappear within a period of 15 to 25 years. It will create problems of drinking water and food grains in most of the North American countries. India is not unaffected from it. The Himalayan glaciers have shrunk about 30 per cent after 1970. The rise in sea levels is a major cause of concern. A large number of cities located in coastal areas will submerge in the sea. Besides, many island countries will ultimately lose their existence and will be washed away from the surface of the earth. In India this effects may also threaten the Lakshadweep islands, Mu mbai and deltas of Ganges (West Bengal), Carvers (T.N), Godavari (AP) and Mahanadi, Orissa. India is also affected by global warming. As India is an agricultural country, it is largely dependent on rainfall but due to irregular rainfalls caused by global warming, the yield is decreasing every year. The rise in atmospheric temperature and fall in rain would naturally result in decline in crop production. Moreover, it would have great effect on biodiversity as well. Forestation can be of great help in this regard. Planting more trees worldwide will help restore the imbalance. Secondly, we must follow on environmental policy of ‘reduce,  reuse, recycle’, i.e. promoting the reuse of anything. Thirdly, the use of fuel-efficient vehicles should be promoted as these vehicles have lower emissions of harmful gases. Fourthly, every individual should be aware of the importance of the protecting environment. Besides, eco- friendly technologies must be promoted, and must be substituted with the technologies which cause great emission of global warming gases. Many government agencies around the world are very interested in maintaining fossil fuel use, especially coal. Furthermore, we are not going to run out of coal in the near term (oil may begin to run low sometime after 2010). Methods for reducing carbon emission levels while still burning coal are now investigation by government and industry, as we now discuss. It is too late to debate on global warming. We need to take some measures to decrease global warming. Forestation can be of great help in this regard. Planting more trees worldwide will help restore the imbalance. Secondly, we must follow on environmental policy of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’, i.e. promoting the reuse of anything. Thirdly, the use of fuel-efficient vehicles should be promoted as these vehicles have lower emissions of harmful gases. Fourthly, every individual should be aware of the importance of the protecting environment. Besides, eco- friendly technologies must be promoted, and must be substituted with the technologies which cause great emission of global warming gases. We should control the growth of population by decreasing birth rate. This can be done by proper family planning. We should reduce the use of chlorofloro carbons. More use of non-conventional source of energy like wind power and solar energy. It is said that â€Å"There is no place like home† and earth is our home so we need to protect it. Policies are made every day but do we follow it? The answer is â€Å"No†. We all are aware of global warming so we need to change the way we think that we can’t do anything and only the rich who are seated in the seats of government can save us. Who you are, whatever you are you can do something for your planet when you think global warming is a problem.

Boonstra (2002) conducted a survey and the study revealed that the rate of unmarried childbirths in teenagers has increased â€Å"from 13% in 1950 to 79% in 2000†. Moralization The increase in the rate of teenage pregnancy has given rise to the hot debate regarding public morality. The emphasis on morality has not made a drastic shift from teenage sexuality to no teenage sex at all, but actually it has given rise to safe sex with the use of contraceptive measures. Mothering on welfare (Breheny & Stephens, 2007; Phoenix, 1991, p.87) or issues like sexually transmitted diseases as AIDS (Teenage Pregnancy, 1999) has not compelled the teenagers to refrain from having sex; however, it has made them choosy about their sexual partners while using contraceptives. Although most teenagers do not give serious thought to AIDS but the debate on it has made it a public discussion. The society ignores the fact that the teenagers are not the ones who should be expected to make a revolution against teenage pregnancies; instead, they are the ones who are the recipients of this sexual inheritance from their forefathers.
